Meanings of the word "leisure" for students of Sports Activity of the University of Costa Rica and Montclair State University.

El estudio tuvo como propósito comparar los significados de la palabra “esparcimiento” para un conjunto de estudiantes de Actividad Deportiva de la Universidad de Costa Rica con el conjunto de estudiantes de Actividad Deportiva de Montclair State University, según su género, carrera y años de carrera. Se aplicó el instrumento “Inventario de Significados del esparcimiento”, el cual consta de dos partes. La primera incluye información demográfica (edad, género, estado civil, carrera, año en la carrera, dedicación al estudio). La segunda parte consiste en 23 ítems que pertenecen a cuatro categorías: pasar el tiempo, toma de decisiones, escape de presiones y realización en el esparcimiento. Se tabularon un total de 388 encuestados entre 17 y 24 años que corresponden a un 45% de la UCR y 55% de MSU. En términos generales, la mayoría de las diferencias estadísticamente significativas que se halló en la investigación se centró en las percepciones que tenían las poblaciones estudiantiles de ambas universidades acerca del concepto de esparcimiento como “pasar el tiempo” t “tomar decisiones”. Las percepciones de esparcimiento como “escapar de presiones” y “lograr autorrealización” solo fueron el resultado de diferencias estadísticas significativas de casos específicos. Los resultados demuestran una diferencia entre los estudiantes costarricenses y estadounidenses con respecto a sus percepciones de esparcimiento. El hecho de que la población estudiantil costarricense perciba menormente el esparcimiento como “pasar el tiempo” y “tomar decisiones” refleja la circunstancia de que en Costa Rica el término esparcimiento es poco usado y comprendido. Más bien, la palabra esparcimiento brinda la sensación de algo que se disfruta o vivencia, más que algo de lo cual se puede tomar una decisión. Por el contrario, en Estados Unidos, el esparcimiento se puede relacionar como actividad, lo cual proporciona la opción de escoger lo que se desea hacer, es decir, de “tomar decisiones” acerca de la actividad que se realizará.ABSTRACT: The purpose of the study is to compare the meanings of the word "leisure" for a group of students of Sports Activity at the University of Costa Rica with a group of students of Sports Activity at Montclair State University, according to their gender, career and career years . The first includes demographic information (age, gender, marital status, career, year in the career, dedication to the study). The second part consists on 23 items corresponding to four categories: spending time, making decisions, escaping from stress and performing in recreation. A total of 388 respondents between 17 and 24 years were tabulated, corresponding to 45% of the UCR and 55% of the MSU. By and large, most of the statistically significant differences found in the research are focused on the perceptions that student populations of both universities were about the concept of leisure such as "passing time" and "making decisions". Recreation perceptions such as "escape from stress " and "achieve self-realization" were only the result of significant statistical differences on specific cases. The results show a difference between Costa Rican and American students regarding their perceptions of recreation. The fact is, that Costa Rican student population perceives less recreation as "passing time" and "making decisions" reflects the fact that in Costa Rica the term "leisure" is little used and understood. The word leisure provides the sensation of something that is enjoyed or lived, rather than something from which a decision can be made.
